Wendy’s top tips for walking
- Look out for landmarks. I take photos. They help me (especially when trying a new walk) to find my way home. On a new walk I always walk the same way back.
- Don’t be embarrassed to ask someone to point you in the right direction.
- Have some tried and tested walks – the ones that are very familiar and make you feel safe.
- Use a walking stick if it makes you feel less wobbly. It also helps clear a path through long undergrowth!
- Make sure you have your glasses and/or hearing aid if you need them.
- A tracker on my phone gives me peace of mind. My daughters know where I am, and can help me if I get lost.
- Take time to stop and look. You never know what you might be missing – a hare in the field or deer roaming the hedgerow.
- Remember to look up – a bird in the high branches or a red kite hovering in the sky is a sight to behold.
- Wear sturdy shoes, like walking shoes or trainers, for uneven ground.
- If you can’t tie shoe laces, try ‘no tie’ shoe laces that let you wear your favourite walking shoes – like I do.
